Isoflavonoids are a subgroup of
flavonoids that occur primarily in plants and their structural components such as seeds, flowers and fruits. They exhibit tremendous potential to fight against number of diseases. Soybeans are considered to be the richest source of isoflavonoids. They contain many types of isoflavonoids, but the most beneficial are genistein and daidzein. The highest amounts of soy
isoflavonoids can be found in soy nuts and tempeh. Another natural source of isoflavonoids is red clover.
Isoflavonoids provide protection against a number of diseases. For example, they help prevent osteoporosis by protecting and maintaining strong and healthy bones while improving bone mass and reducing bone resorption. Similarly, they are known to lower the cholesterol and prevent the buildup of arterial plaques. They also help to reduce the blood pressure by increasing vasodilatation. This reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and associated cardiovascular complications while simultaneously promoting cardiovascular health. In addition, isoflavonoids help reduce various forms of cancer including breast cancer and prostate cancer by blocking the cancer causing effects of human estrogen and hindering cell growth respectively, while reducing tumor progression and exerting anti-inflammatory effects. Furthermore, isoflavonoids help relieve postmenopausal symptoms. Moreover, isoflavonoids are natural antioxidants, the antioxidant powers of isoflavonoids help to counteract damaging effects of free radicals in tissues and DNA. Genistein is the most potent antioxidant among the soy isoflavonoids, followed by daidzein. Finally, isoflavonoids are active ingredients of various anti-aging creams and lotions for while protecting skin from sunburns.
